Polyrhythmic Lap Pats

Again, this lesson builds on the previous lesson, but beginners can still get involved, Just playing air drums on your lap and improvising will be of benefit, imagine hearing the whole drum kit in your head as you do this.

When you are feeling more confident with subdivisions you can start exploring the world of polyrhythms!

In the video I demonstrate where to get started, which is just practicing breaking a single beat up into it’s subdivisions.

Then I demonstrate how the polyrhythm on 3 over 2 sounds and how 5 over 2 sounds… another rhythm to try and figure out would be 4 over 3.

There are methods to working these out, but I recommend trying to feel around for them first, then recording yourself and checking how you did.

DON’T OVERLOOK THE BASICS, just getting 3 over 2 solid will pay dividends.
