Brick 1 – The Springboard

This is probably the most played lick on the guitar, and for good reason.

It is a chameleon, it can be a pick up, it can be an ending, it can lead to so many bricks.

Just check out how SRV uses it on his first album, from the Texas Flood to Testify.

It’s everywhere, I dare you to find one blues jam where a guitarist doesn’t play this lick, I’ve even seen Gary Moore play it backwards.

So why learn a cliche? Because it always works, and the possibilities are endless.

Those 2 things make this invaluable.  They are a rare combination. The best blues bricks have this combination.

Don’t forget – All of these licks are based around this minor pentatonic position, with its root on the six string. Relating back to this shape will help with improvising in and out of the shapes and transposing to other keys.
