How I Built My… Alternate Picking

Key exercises that I used to develop picking speed and dexterity

1 Lessons

Alternate picking is probably the technique I get asked about more than anything else, and I understand why — it’s both fundamental and genuinely difficult to develop well. This course documents exactly how I built my alternate picking from scratch, the exercises I used, and the order I worked through them.

What this course covers: A step-by-step account of the approach I used to develop alternate picking technique — from single-string fundamentals and adjacent string changing through to string skipping and musical application. It’s broken into clear stages so you can work through it systematically and ask questions along the way.

Why This Approach Works

A lot of picking instruction jumps straight into exercises without explaining the underlying logic. This course takes a different approach: each stage builds directly on the previous one, so you understand not just what to practise but why you’re practising it. That understanding is what lets you continue developing on your own once the course is done.

A Note on Progress and Community

Technique development can feel slow and solitary. Please remember to ask questions and post videos of yourself practising in the Facebook forum — seeing other people work through the same challenges and getting feedback on your own playing makes a real difference. Tabs will be uploaded as needed.
