Isolated Pull-Off Timing

Pull-offs require a subtly different skill set from hammer-ons — the timing of the release is everything, and getting it right brings a whole new level of fluency to your legato playing.

What this course covers
This module walks you through the mechanics of the pull-off in isolation, focusing on the precise timing and motion that produce a note which is full, even, and musical rather than thin or percussive.

The Mechanics of a Pull-Off

A pull-off is not simply lifting the finger — it is a small, sideways pluck of the string as the finger releases. That motion is what sets the string vibrating and produces a clear note. Without it, you get silence or a dull thud rather than a singing tone.

Timing the Release

Consistent timing turns a series of pull-offs into something musical. Practise with a metronome at a slow tempo and focus on placing each released note squarely on the beat. Only once the timing is reliable should you start working up the speed.
