Open Keys

Once you’re familiar with the open positons, you can move up the neck, but keep the open strings as anchors.
We can intersperse open strings with our lines and improvisation, letting the notes ring through into eachother to create banjo style licks.
Here are the Open Keys played at the 5th position. Use the numbers to help you with the order of the notes.
Once you can play these scales ascending and descending. Try the following…
1)Practice playing the Chords of the key and the scales.
2)Practice the scales in sequences. eg in thirds, 4ths , triads etc
3)Write some licks out of these positions utilising the open strings.
4) Work out the fingerings for the 9-12th position.
