Phrasing School

6 Lessons

Most guitar players spend years developing the notes they play and almost no time thinking about how they play them. Phrasing School is designed to fix that — to give you a deep, practical understanding of what makes a musical statement compelling, memorable, and expressive.

What This Course Covers

Phrasing School works through every element that shapes how a musical phrase communicates: its length, direction, rhythmic identity, harmonic content, and the dynamics and articulation that bring it to life. You’ll study what phrases do — the functions they serve in a solo or arrangement — as well as how to craft them consciously rather than leaving them to chance. The course moves from foundational concepts through to practical improvisation strategies, giving you a complete toolkit for becoming a more expressive, intentional player.

From Analysis to Application

Understanding phrasing starts with being able to hear and describe what’s already happening in music you love. The early part of the course builds this analytical ear — learning to identify the key features and ranges of a phrase — before moving into exercises that develop your own phrasing instincts.

Rhythm, Melody, and the Bigger Picture

Phrasing is where rhythm, melody, and harmony meet. The course addresses each of these dimensions and explores how they interact, giving you a structured way to think about improvisation and composition that goes well beyond scales and patterns.
