“Sunny” by Bobby Hebb is one of the most recorded songs in history — a deceptively simple melody built on a chord progression that has kept jazz and fusion musicians busy for decades. This course takes you inside that progression, showing you how to analyse it, understand its harmonic logic, and use it as a platform for developing your improvisation over both major and minor ii-V-I changes.
What this course covers: We will analyse the original pop version, explore how jazz musicians have interpreted and reharmonised the changes, work through scale choices for each chord, and look at how to develop your phrasing and vocabulary over this standard. Recommended listening and transcription work are built in throughout — getting the music in your ears is as important as anything you do on the guitar.
“Sunny” is a fantastic vehicle for developing your phrasing over chord changes. Its progression is largely diatonic, which means you can practise nailing the changes in a relatively safe harmonic environment before tackling more complex standards. At the same time, it contains both major and minor ii-V-I sequences, a tritone substitution, and a modulating structure that gives you real harmonic interest to work with. It has also been a fusion standard as well as a jazz standard, so the repertoire of recorded approaches is wide and inspiring.
This course is built around active engagement with the music. Work through as much of the recommended listening as you can — find versions and ideas that appeal to you, then transcribe and internalise them. Transcription does not have to mean writing everything out in notation; even singing along with a recorded line, or working out a few bars on the guitar by ear, will sharpen your sense of the harmony and help you absorb phrasing ideas that you can then make your own. The goal is to develop a genuine feel for the song, not just a theoretical understanding of its chord symbols.
