The Altered Pentatonic

This scale is great for a lot of reasons!

Firstly, It introduces the idea of super imposing scales; We are playing a scale that doesn’t contain the root of the chord. This is a great observation as maybe it will inspire you to try this in other contexts.

The second reason is that it uses what you’ve already learned in the lesson before. WE are going to repurpose the 5 dorian pentatonic shapes to make this altered pentatonic scale.

By playing the dorian pentatonic up a half step from the root of a chord we get the following intervals –

b9 3 b5 b13 b7

These are all notes that will fit well over an altered chord, or a situation where you want to create an altered sound.

You will also find these notes in the Altered Scale.

Note: Don’t play the notes in the red circles, they’re just to illustrate the location of the root of the chord you would play this over.
