3 Creative Hybrid Picking Exercises from Classical Guitar

Welcome to this bonus mid-week lesson!

Today I looked down at my right hand and noticed that my nails had grown out quite a bit longer than normal. Usually I get reminded to cut them when I go to do some two-handed tapping and find they’re too long, however, for some reason I haven’t been tapping and therefore they went untamed.

They’ll probably never get this long again so I thought I’d leap on the change to shoot another hybrid picking lesson while I’ve still got them.

This lesson is an explanation of three exercises that I took from classical guitarists.

In the mid to late 2000s I started diving into traditional classical guitar exercises for the P-I-M-A right hand system and converting them into hybrid picking exercises. Classical guitar has had considerably longer to develop its repertoire of systems than rock guitar has, so it’s always been a logical place to go to for inspiration and knowledge.

The following exercises are comprised of what I found to be the most effective exercises to cover everything. However, I strongly suggest looking into the subject yourself! Some further learning will be included in the references section at the end of the course.
