Listening List

Right, before we start looking at more complex changes, I would like you to start listening to as many different versions as possible and start to get a feel for how great artists have interpreted the song.

Through listening we can learn song itself as well as;

  • How different atrists have interpreted the melody
  • Grooves, Arrangements, and reharmonisations that you might prefer
  • Note/Scale choices for different section to help you chose options when improvising

and loads more. So let’s get listening!

The first thing I’ve done is created a spotify playlist with loads of great vocal interpretations as well as some monster instrumentals. Start with the vocal versions and learn to sing along. Find an artists interpretation that you like and use that as your basis. Do not use the Real Book as your melody. That’s an over simplification that misses the nuance in the actual melody. So learn from a recording 🙂

Now that your ears are educated with some very traditional and classy versions of the song, here’s some shreddy ones that might tantilise you…

Okay, Lets get to the changes…
