Jazz Changes – Scale Choices

The harmony here is actually quite traditional within the Jazz idiom and we could technically use only modes derived from the major scale.

That would mean all minor chords get dorian, all dominant get mixolydian, all min7b5 get locrian, and all major get lydian.

However, I wanted to graph out some more exciting options for you to try, here’s an outline of the form with some scale more interesting scale choices. Keep a look out for;

  • Two’ing the Five
  • Tritone Substitions
  • Pentatonic Substitutions
  • Altering Dominant Chords that resolve to a minor chord

Your task now is to head over to youtube and jam over a backing track or even better, jam over a recording of the song. I love jamming over Pat Martino’s version, playing along with him will help your time feel and phrasing.
