Modern Changes: Turnaround

I really love the turnaround on the Modern Changes,

It’s a variation of a I-VI-ii-V that works in a minor key.

It goes A-7 – F#m7b5 – B-11(or B-7b5) – E7alt

I’ve created a loop of just those two bars for you to experiment with. Experiment with different scale choices and notice how the the root movement and chord qualities really blur the lines between a traditional Major I-VI-ii-V and a minor i-VI-ii-V.

Once you can nail the arpeggios, over the changes, here are some scale options to try

A minor 7 – Dorian, Minor Pentatonic, Aeolian, Harmonic Minor, Melodic Minor, Dorian #4, Dorian Pentatonic (1 b3 4 5 6)

F#m7b5 – Locrian, Locrian nat2, Locrian nat6, H+W Diminished

Bm11 – Dorian, locrian, locrian nat2, Dorian Pentatonic (1 b3 4 5 6), Locrian Pentatonic (1 b3 b5 b6 b7)

E7alt – Mixolydian, altered, phrygian dominant, H+W Diminished, mixolydian b2, mixolydian b6, Altered Pentatonic (1 b2 3 b5 b6)
