Learning the Notes on the Fretboard and Essential Geometry

How to memorise the fretboard

7 Lessons

Not knowing where the notes are on the fretboard is one of the most persistent limitations a guitarist can carry. It holds back improvisation, makes transposing awkward, slows down sight-reading, and makes following chord charts feel like a guessing game. This course fixes that — systematically, without requiring you to memorise reams of information before you can get started.

What this course covers: A structured path from complete beginner to confident fretboard navigator, using landmarks, shapes, and specific exercises to cement the notes into your subconscious. If you’re in a hurry, the three shapes lesson will get you up and running fast — otherwise, work through everything in order for a complete picture with no grey areas.

Why fretboard knowledge matters

Knowing your notes stops you getting lost. It helps you improvise, compose, read music, transpose on the fly, and follow chord charts without hesitation. The list of skills it unlocks is long, and the time investment to get there is shorter than most people assume. Every lesson in this course is designed to move you forward efficiently, not to pad the material.

How to work through the course

Start at the beginning and work in order — each lesson builds on the one before it, and skipping ahead tends to leave gaps that cause problems later. The exception is if you’re short on time: in that case, jump straight to the three shapes section, which gives you a usable framework immediately. Either way, the Facebook Group is there if you have questions or want to share your progress.
